MATA GUJRI JI

Mata Gujri Ji was the wife of the ninth Guru, SRI GURU TEGH BAHADUR JI, the mother of GURU GOBIND SINGH JI and the grandmother of four SAHIBZAADE.

Imprisoned in the Thanda Burj of Sirhind with her youngest grandsons Zorawar and Fateh Singh, she attained martyrdom, at the age of 81 years, when she was told of their execution.

At the age of 51, her husband attained martyrdom, she was made to guide the whole Panth and protect the young Gobind Rai . She is a perfect example of sacrifice, bravery and grace.

After the splitting of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji's family due to the flooding in the Sirsa River, Mata ji remained with the Sahibzada Zorawar Singh Ji and Sahibzada Fateh Singh Ji. Guru Gobind SIngh Ji with Sahibzada Ajit Singh Ji and Sahibzada Jhujhar Singh Ji and the fauj of Khalsa reached the other bank of the Sirsa River.

When Mata Ji and the sahibzadas were arrested and confined in Sirhind Fort, and as the children were summoned to appear in court each day, she kept urging them to remain steadfast in their faith. She constantly reminded the Sahibzadas that their Grandfather and Great-Grandfather had both sacrificed their lives to strengthen the ideals of Guru Nanak. Her support of her grandsons played such an important role in Sikhism that as Sikhs.

MATA SAHIB KAUR

The Mother of Khalsa, Mata Sahib Kaur Ji was the wife of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Before the Amrit Sanchar ceremony, she was called Sahib Devan, but after the Amrit Sanchar Ceremony, she was named Mata Sahib Kaur Ji.

Mata Sahib Devan's father wished her daughter to marry Guru Gobind Singh Ji, however as the Guru was already married, her father asked the Guru's permission for Mata Sahib Devan to live in the Guru's house as Sikh and serve the Guru and his family. Guru Gobind Singh married to Mata Sahib Devan at Guru ka Lahore but never had a physical relationship with the Guru. As a consequence, Guru Gobind Singh made her the "Mother of the Khalsa". Up to this day in history, all Sikhs who take Amrit consider Mata Sahib Kaur as their (spiritual) Mother, and Guru Gobind Singh ji as their (spiritual) Father. (Source: sikhiwiki.org)
